What is Quartz Limestone?
This is a sedimentary rock composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). This organic sedimentary rock is formed by the accumulation of shell, coral, debris, etc. It can also be developed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate.
Composition of Quartz Limestone
This contains minimum 50% calcium carbonate and 50% quartz, pyrite, feldspar, clay minerals, large nodules of chert, etc. This agglomerated stone has quartz grains bound together.
Appearance
It comes in whitish or pale yellow color.
Properties of Quartz Limestone
This is a harder, less porous and uniform mineral comes with high resistance. This remarkably consistent stone found in tables or slabs that reduces extraction costs. It comes with excellent bending strength and compression. Owing to low abrasiveness, it ensures ease of cutting. It comes with the actual density of 2.4 – 2.8 kg / dm ³. In addition to this, its hardness is measured about 3 on Moh’s Scale.
Applications of Quartz Limestone
This is used in many ways in different sectors after converting the stone into powdered form. It is used in the following sectors:
1)Aglime: As this is a cost-effective acid-neutralizing agent, it is widely used to treat acidic soils in farms.
2) Animal Feed: it is also provided as a dietary supplement to dairy cattle to fulfill the calcium needs of their body.
3) Construction Industry: This is used in the development of railroad ballast and road base. In addition to this, it is also used in concrete as an aggregate and in the development of cement. This is strong and dense in nature with few pore spaces that make it easy to withstand abrasion and thaw freeze.
4) Dimension Stone: This is cut into blocks and slabs to be used in the domain of architecture as facing stone, window sills, etc. It is also used to design floor tiles, stair treads, etc.
5) Manufacturing Industry: This is widely used in the refining, smelting and other processes.
6) Roofing Granules: Crushed power is used to coat roofs and asphalt-impregnated shingles to make them heat and weather resistant.
